Important Message from COX about our Migraiton to Digital

Digital Migration of Educational and Government Channels- OKC Metro FAQs

Overview
Effective December 13, 2011, education and government access channels in Oklahoma will be converted from an analog format to a digital format.

  • Note: The majority of Cox customers subscribe to digital services and will be unaffected by this transition.

Why is Cox moving these channels from analog to digital?
Moving the educational and government channels to digital will allow Cox to continue to launch additional HD channels and other advanced services. Cox has already moved several other channels to digital as a necessary step to free up bandwidth, or "space" on our network, giving us the ability to offer the products and services our customers want from us.

I thought Cox was required to carry access programming on its most basic tier of service?
Cox is required to provide capacity for access programming on its TV Starter package. However, there is no obligation that educational or government channels be transmitted in a particular format (analog or digital). Cox's TV Starter package is composed of both digital and analog channels, and all such channels are transmitted to every subscriber as part of the package.

How will I know if I will be able to view the educational and government channels in my home after this transition?
If you are already a digital customer, or if you have a television with a digital tuner, you will continue to have the ability to view these channels after the transition.

How do I know if my television has a digital tuner?
The majority of televisions sold after 2006 include a "QAM" or digital tuner which enables free reception of digital cable channels without the use of a digital box. If you have purchased a television since that time, likely the only action you will need to take is running a scan for channels on your television. Once you do so, the educational and government channels will appear in the same channel location as they were on analog: channel 18 (Education Access) channel 20 (Government Access).

If my TV does have a digital tuner, how do I run a scan to locate these channels on the digital lineup?
Open the television's auto program feature, this is usually located in the setup menu. Follow the prompts to run "autoscan." The televisions tuner will automatically pick up both the analog and digital signal and then assign it the corresponding channel number.

If I only have an analog television in my home, how can I view the educational and government channels?
Analog televisions will need a digital set-top box in order to receive the educational and government channels after the December 13 transition. As a courtesy, Cox is offering one (1) digital box at no cost now through December 13, 2012 to Cox TV Starter or Essential residential customers. Boxes can be picked up at Cox retail locations and self installation is free. There will be a trip charge of $25 for a professional installation.

How will Cox accommodate homebound customers who would like a digital box?

Do other video providers require their customers to have a digital set-top box?
Yes, all other video providers require the use of a box in order to receive anv of their programming.

What channels will I be able to see if I get a free digital box?
Customers could see additional channels appear with the addition of a digital set-top box, depending on whether customers have the TV Starter or TV Essential lineup. These channel lineups can be viewed on our website at cox.com.

Will the free digital box enable Cox customers to access all digital channels?
No. The digital box will provide Cox TV Starter and Essential customers access to view channels in those packages only. The other digital channels can only be accessed through subscription services.

How were customers notified of this transition?
Cox has made several efforts to notify our customers about this transition including a bill message, web update and a notice in the Oklahoman. Who should I call at Cox for more information? For more information, please call405-600-7129.
